Elmore Name
Trying to find family connection to Elmer / Elmore

GGrandfather George Elmore Northrop

The Elmore name could have been
Family direct or indirect
Served in battle 1762 rolls of French and Indian war includes 2 Northrops William Northrop and Daniel Northrop under (then) Captain Samuel Elmer. Might be William1734 s/o Wm Greenfield or Ridgefield.   Daniel could be Ridgefield or Milford (Downs), Link
Neighbor
Doctor
Minister
Friend
Since other middle names seem to be family, my guess is Elmore is family as well.

The time period of the connection could be at any time before George's birth in 1844

Stratford/Trumbull/Huntington, Sharon/Litchfield and Norwalk, Wilton Ridgefield areas are most interesting because of the proximity to Northrops and related families.

Stratford/Trumbull/Huntington
(Place names could be Stratford, North Stratford, Unity, Trumbull, Ripton, Huntington)
Sharon/ Ellsworth /Litchfield County Towns
Northrops, Alvords, Wakeman, Jennings and Burr also found here
Norwalk, Wilton Ridgefield Fairfield & Huntington
Northrops may have had interactions with Wilton, Redding and Ridgefield. Separate Northrop branches center around Ridgebury
Very Early connections, but names disappear Names over multiple generations Very Early connections, but names disappear

Many from this area end up in Litchfield County. They also have Woodbury area connection. It's an area adjacent to Greenfield /Easton (especially given roads of the time). Stratford area also has a very early Methodist tradition. Changing names and boundaries of parishes/townships make it more challenging to track individuals

There are many Elmer/Elmores in Sharon area over multiple generations
Josiah Northrop (1702 - 1788) is mentioned as a pioneer of Trumbull. (around but prob after 1731.) Link Zophar>Josiah below #josiahnorthrupfindgrave. This is ~ 10 years before the split in the Milford Church and the establishment of the Second (Plymouth) Church. Perhaps Josiah's presence in Stratford was associated with his wife's Sanford family. His step sister marries a second cousin to his wife. Second Cousins Mary Sanford (Thomas SANFORD2> Ephriam SANFORD3> Samuel SANFORD4) and John Sanford (Thomas SANFORD2> Samuel SANFORD3> Samuel SANFORD) married step siblings Josiah Northrop (Zophar Northrop1661 & Sarah Tibbals> Josiah Northrop1699) and Rebecca Hannah Northrop (Zophar Northrop1661 & Hannah Andrews> Rebecca Hannah Northrop1712).

1775 Sharon, CT The General Assembly was forthwith convened, and a large military force raised. One company was raised in Sharon and its vicinity. Samuel Elmore received a Major’s commission, and also had the command of this company. Amos Chappell was the Lieutenant.
Elijah Elmore one regiment from New York and two from CT. The Fifth CT, commanded by Col. David Waterbury, contained a company recruited from Redding and vicinity, and led by a Redding officer, Captain Zalmon Read. The roll of this company carries nearly one hundred names, about one- third of which are easily recognizable as those of Redding men. 1776 marched to NY link
Amos Elmer and Elijah Elmer are found before 1720 in Stratford. Elijah moves to Sharon. Link census Find

The Predominant Elmer Families move to the Hartford then Windsor/ East Windor area. Some then move to the Norwalk/Wilton area, some to the Stratford area and a number (probably from both) end up in Litchfield County. Some of the early Elmers are ministers. Some are distinguished in battle. There are also some who did not fare so well and have records of debt and lawsuits.

In 1762 Captain of Sharon Company of Col Nathaniel Whiting's Regiment Elmor's 8th Company included William Northrup, Daniel Northrup Rolls of CT Men in the French & Indian War Campaign of 1762 Elmore ~ 39 at the time. A Major in Hinman's regiment in 1775, and afterwards a Colonel in his own regiment in New York line.

Son, John (1765-1849), who died at Canaan Corner, Conn., was a Representative in the General Assembly thirteen times between 1802 & 1815, and John's son, John Jr. John Elmore, Esq. was a Representative from the same town in 1837. He died in 1856."
Elmore and most of his company officers recruited their men in Connecticut and to some extent from the regiments that served in the North. Some of the officers belonged in New York and a few in Massachusetts, and men were recruited from both of those states
father, Colonel Elmore and three sons, Samuel, Martin, and Jesse. There was one sister, Molly. In 1776 they joined the Continental Army and fought through the Revolutionary War. They sold their farms and when the war was over their farms were done. The Government gave them a grant of land in Vermont of one-half township and named the town, Elmore, after them. In the spring of 1790 they left their old home town and went by boat up the Hudson River to Albany, New York. From there through a canal to Lake George, on to Lake Champlain and landed at Swanton, VT. From there they followed up the Lamoille River to a bridle path which led to the town of Johnson, sixteen miles from their land grant. Martin Elmore was a surveyor, so he set up the compass and in two weeks time they had round and explored the land. There were more rocks than land but they located a spot to build their home and built a log house and fixed it up so a man could spend a winter there. In the fall they left for Sharon, leaving Martin Elmore behind alone

Monroe originally part of Ripton/Huntington. At least part of it was considered part of Stratford/North Stratford.
In Newtown, CT records is an entry, "Sept. 28, 1760, informed of the death of Job Northrup at Schenectady, NY." Distribution of the estate of Job Northrup at Brookfield, or Newtown, May 11, 1761. His children, Isaiah, Sarah, and Mary, chose William Northrup as their guardian, and Mehetabel Northrup was made guardian of the "three younger." This does not quite agree with dates of birth. Quite likely "Mehetabel" and "Mabel" are the same. The record is in Danbury, CT. AJN

Thanks so much for the postings and pictures.

I have a brick wall with my Amos Northrop b~ 1776-1780 – unconnected in the A Judd Northrup genealogy (Kent, Warren, Wahsington, CT).  One of his grandsons (my g grandfather) bears the name George Elmore Northrop so I keep hunting for Elmer Elmore connections.

I currently circling around the Trumbull/Huntington area since I found a mention of Amos and Elijah Elmer with some other connected names.  http://files.usgwarchives.org/ct/fairfield/history/other/amoselme188gms.txt

If you come across any connection, I would be delighted if you would send it along.

I find it interesting that the Elmer/Elmore name is passed down for so many generations in Northrop and other CT lines  -- perhaps it is the Rev war connection as well as family connections.

Dear Sundown – that for the generosity on the pictures – I will probably take advantage of your offer and give you the proper credit as posted.

Thanks again,

Beth Northrop

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I found that Redding Revolutions list quite touching – a documentation of how their views on the Revolution could separate families with the same last name by hundreds of miles.

I was pleased with the find since it connects the Redding area with two names (Middle names of my gGrandfather George Elmore (sometimes as Elmer) and William Fenn Northrop, his older brother) that I’ve been searching for (Now I have to check out that Baker):

The marriage of Bartholomew Baker of Redding" to Sarah Fenn, Dec. 29, 1778, is recorded in the church records of the parish of Judea (now Washington, Conn.).

The roll of this company carries nearly one hundred names, about one- third of which are easily recognizable as those of Redding men.

[Rec. Ct. Men in Rev.]

The Fifth was a large regiment, over one thousand strong, and in the latter part of June marched to New York.

Yes I would like to add your Jonathan and Mary Alvord Tombstones to the site.  How would you like the picture to be attributed?

It is interesting to see the names connected again and again.  In Southport mid-late 1800s the Northrops and Meekers are together in the Methodist Episcopal church.  Here is a rather jumbled page that might offer some interest.  http://www.damnedcomputer.com/Genealogy/nmethodischurchspt.html

It seems to me that the Alvord connections across generations were very strong – they seemed to retain connections with or at least knowledge of each other.

I still have some questions for David (by the way I do think David was with Abigail Jennings and John with Elizabeth Bulkley –I love that Elizabeth was such a voracious reader – probably a real oddity in that age.)
Why did David and Abigail move to the Kent Litchfield area and what was his profession? The only documented tie is with what appears to be the Eastern CT branch including the other David (carpenter).  I haven’t found all the David Census data (if it exists).  It looks like Abigail moves back to Greens Farms after David’s death to be around that concentration of extended family – both Jennings and Alvord.

Many Northrops are missing it 1810 census were they and maybe Alvords all involved in some event of the time – maybe canals or the development of Ballston or Saratoga or were they connected with the Alvord Salt manufacture?

What other names appear in Canada around Jonathan and Mary Alvord?  Perhaps they hold some other clues for me.

Thanks again,

Beth Northrop

Hi Beth,

I'm glad you found my "stuff" on RootsWeb and the blog. Unfortunately, I don't have anything that can help you with your Solomon Northrop marrying Sarah Knap.

If I hadn't already known about Jonathan Knap's Loyalist ties, I would have been thrilled with your information. However, I discovered his burial site, by accident when I was up in Canada about 11 years ago. And it was a double thrill that Mary Alvord's was next to his, and both had a lot of information. I noticed I hadn't done a blog post on that, and perhaps I should, esp. since I have another Loyalist from CT buried in the same area.

You have a lot on your Northrop line, but the ones you want are always hidden, and cause us so much grief. Jonathan's father David married a Anna Meeker (I think), and she is a brick wall.

If you want to use my Mary Alvord tombstone picture or any information, please ask first. I will say yes, but please ask.

Thanks so much for writing.

Barbara

Hi Barbara:

Do you know of any connection between your Jonathan and Mary Alvord and the Solomon Northrop listed below as marrying Sarah Knap in Redding, CT?

It is especially intriguing to me since I have Northrops and Alvords in my family.  (http://www.damnedcomputer.com/Genealogy/nalvordcorr6.html

And I just found documentation of my speculation that Jonathan was a loyalist which might have led to Jonathan’s removal to Canada (below). http://www.archive.org/stream/revolutionarysol00grum/revolutionarysol00grum_djvu.txt

I will be delighted with any info you can provide.

Thanks in advance,

Beth Northrop

Here’s the one I just found:

Redding was not free from this species of disorder. Here, as elsewhere, were the elements necessary for its production : the firm loyalist, the inflexible patriot, the lawless character. To what extent the animosities bred by the political discords of previous }ears had been carried is not shown, but the begin- ning of the year 1775 inaugurated a miniature reign of terror for the tories of this vicinity. The proceedings of the Con- tinental Congress of September 5, 1774, furnished the occasion for a m.ovement on the part of the tories which led to the most unhappy results. The Congress adopted a declaration of rights, claiming the enjoyment of life, liberty, and property as natural rights, and the common law of England as the heritage of the colonists; declared the people bound by no law to which they had not consented through their own representatives ; asserted the right of local government by colonial assemblies, and the right to trial by juries selected from the people; denied to Parliament all power of taxation; protested against the quar- tering of standing armies upon the colonies without tlieir con- sent ; denounced eleven recent parliamentary acts ; and formed an " American Association," pledging its members to entire commercial non-intercourse with Great Britain and its de- pendencies, or with any American colony which failed to up- hold the association, until all obnoxious legislation should be repealed. Committees were to be appointed in every locality throughout the colonies to detect violators of the association, with whom all dealings were to be broken off. The " Declara- tion of Colonial Rights " came very near being a declaration of independence. 14 READING LOYALIST ASSOCIATION. These proceedings were looked upon with anxiety and alarm by loyahsts everywhere, who saw the peace and security of the country, as well as their own personal interests, jeopard- ized thereby. They at once formed loyalist associations, pro- testing against the resolves of the patriot Congress. A con- siderable number of the tories of Fairfield County organized under the name of the " Reading Loyalist Association," and in February, 1775, caused a series of resolutions to be pub- lished in James Rivington's Gazetteer at New York, publicly declaring their sentiments relative to the proceedings of Con- gress and the acts of the American Association. Their story can be most fitly and fully presented by the republication of the original documents, as given in Force's " American Archives " : READING (CONN.) ASSOCIATION. Mr. Rivington : In the present critical situation of publick affairs, we the subscribers, Freeholders and Inhabitants of the town of Reading, and the adjoining parts, in the County of Fairfield, and Colony of CT, think it necessary, (through the columns of your Paper) to assure the publick that we are open enemies to any change in the present happy Constitution ; and highly disapprove of all measures in any degree calculated to promote confusion and disorder ; for which purpose, and in order to avoid the general censure incurred by a great part of this Colony from the mode of conduct here adopted for the purpose of opposing the British Government, we have entered into the following Resolves and Agreements, viz : First. Resolved, That while we enjoy the privileges and immunities of the English Constitution, we will render all due obedience to his most gracious Majesty King George the Third, and that a firm depend- ence on the mother country is essential to our political safety and happiness. Second. Resolved, That the privileges and immunities of this Con- stitution are yet (in a good degree) continued to all his Majesty's American subjects, except those who, we conceive, have justly for- feited their title thereto. Third. Resolved, That we suppose the Continental Congress was constituted for the purpose of restoring harmony between Great Britain and her Colonies, and removing the displeasure of his Majesty towards his American subjects, whereas, on the contrary, some of their Resolutions appear to us immediately calculated to widen the present unhappy breach, counteract the first principles of civil society, and in a great degree abridge the privileges of their constituents. Fourth. Resolved, That notwithstanding we will in all circum- stances, conduct with prudence and moderation, we consider it an indis- pensable duty we owe to our King and Constitution, our country and READING LOYALIST ASSOCIATION. 15 posterity, to defend, maintain, and preserve, at the risk of our lives and properties, the prerogative of the crown, and the privileges of the sub- ject from all attacks by any rebellious body of men, any Committees of Inspection, Correspondence, &c. [Signed by one hundred and forty one Inhabitants, whose names are to be seen at the Printer's.] Immediately upon the publication of this document the patriots of Redding set themselves to work to discover the signers of the instrument. This does not seem to have been a matter of great difficulty, for presently a list of the Redding subscribers was made public. READING (CONN.) COMMITTEE. Whereas, there was a certain number of Resolves published in James Rivington's Gazetteer, of the 22,^ of February, 1775, and said by said Rivington to be signed by one hundred and forty one Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Town of Reading, and the adjacent parts, in the County of Fairfield, and Colony of CT; and whereas said Resolves are injurious to the rights of this. Colonj-, and breathe a spirit of enmity and opposition to the rights and liberties of all America, and are in direct opposition to the Association of the Continental Congress ; and notwithstanding said Resolutions were come into with a (seeming) view to secure the said signers some extraordinary privileges and immunities, yet either through negligence in the Printer, or upon design of the subscribers, said signed names are not made publick : And now, if there be any advantage in adopting those principles, we are willing they should be entitled thereto; and for which end, and for the more effectual carrying into execution said Association we have taken some pains, and by the assistance of him who carried said Resolves to said Printer, we have obtained the whole of said names. But as we mean not to publish the names of any except those that belong to said Reading, their names are as follows, viz : David Knap Andrev/ Knap Daniel Lyon Nehemiah Seely, Jun. Stephen Lacy James Adams Zaccheus Morehouse Ephraim Whitlock Jabez Lyon Prince Hawse Andrew Patchen Ezekiel Hill David Manrow Daniel Morehouse Ephraim Deforest Lazarus Beach Seth Hull Hezekiah Piatt Zebulon Piatt Timothy Piatt Lazarus Wheeler Joshua Hall Jonathan Knap James Gray Peter Lyon John Drew Jonathan Meeker Samuel Hawley Jonathan Mallery, Jr. John Seymour Jesse Bearslee Darling Gyer Ebenezer Williams Paul Bartram John Gyer Abel Burr Shubael Bennet John Picket John Picket, Jun. i6 READING LOYALIST ASSOCIATION. Signed by order of the Committee of Observation for said Town of Reading. Ebenezer Couch, Chairman. Obed Hendrix Isaac Piatt Enos Lee John Lee Nathaniel Barlow Asael Patchen Benjamin Sturgis Ebenezer Sturgis William Lee Seth Banks David Turney John Sandford Something like taunt and sarcasm is apparent in this cir- cular of the Redding committee. Whether such was its intent, such was evidently its effect. After consultation, the loyalists resolved to make a stand, and, through the medium they had previously employed, boldly declared their entire membership. The answer to the committee appeared in Rivington's paper: Mr. Rivington : You are desired by many staunch friends of the King and the Constitution, in this Colony, to insert the names of the subscribers to the Reading Association, as published in the Gazetteer, on the 23"^ of February. ■ John Lyon. Obadiah Piatt having been proscribed in Mr. Gaines Paper, on a suspicion of subscribing the Association, the publick may be assured the above is the very list delivered to the Printers and that Obadiah Piatt's name was not inserted in it. There are no signers to this piece under twenty-one years of age. Then the storm broke. The members of the association being- piibhcly known, were now committed to the support of the royal government or to the necessity of submitting to the demands of the dominant party. Men of various shades of opinion were among the signers of the resolves : ardent loyal- ists, conservative citizens, timid individuals seeking the safe l8 TREATMENT OF LOYALISTS. side, for absolute unanimity is not to be found in any com- bination of men. Each had placed his own interpretation on the document he signed, and affixed his name with whatever mental reservations he chose to make. Many of the loyalist associators were induced, by means more readily guessed than known, to refrain from active oppo- sition to the patriots ; the course of events soon brought some of them into complete accord with the opponents of the home government; but upon the heads of those who persisted in upholding the royal authority the wrath of the people fell with unmitigated severity. Just what was done with these unfor- tunate persons may be inferred from statements made in a preceding paragraph, or learned from personal records in another part of this volume. The severity of their treatment exceeded their powers of endurance. The harassed tories fled to the forest, and, hidden in caves and thickets, watched and waited for an opportunity to place themselves under royal protection. No other refuge could they find, for the British army was far away, soon to be besieged in Boston, and finally to be forced out of the country altogether, and it was many months before the arrival of royal troops at New York brought the prospect of deliverance. Even then, escape to the British lines was an undertaking of extreme difficulty and peril, for the vigilant patriots guarded every avenue of retreat. The lines of the American army barred passage by land to New York, and the patriots seem early to have secured all the water craft on the northern coast of Long Island Sound, so that flight by water was only rendered possible by the aid of ex- peditions from the opposite shore. Nevertheless, many of the Redding loyalists got away during the course of the \var, took refuge within the British lines, and even bore arms against their former neighbors. Such was the state of affairs in the town of Redding when the fateful 19th of April, 1775, dawned upon the American colonies, and the country was electrified by the news of the affair at Lexington. The legislature was immediately con- vened, and authorized the embodiment of one-fourth of the militia, to be formed into six regiments of about one thousand men each. Soon the war-drums were calling the people to arms, and, while they were preparing for the field, news came BUNKER HILL. 19 of the bloodless capture of Ticonderoga, with its immense stores of war material, including nearly two hvmdred cannon of various kinds and calibres, one hundred stand of arms, and large quantities of ammunition and commissary stores. This exploit, planned, organized, led and executed by CT men, and paid for out of the CT treasury, stood out in strong contrast to the expedition against Concord, where the king's troops had spilled so much of their blood to disable a few cannon and destroy sixty barrels of flour. Then, while public excitement was at its highest pitch, came the terrific climax of Bunker Hill, where the martial pride and power of Great Britain were humbled by a few hundred undisciplined and toil-weary farmers, and a profitless victory secured to the royal arms only after an unparalleled slaughter.

Hi Cal:

I’ve been looking for an Elmore that might connect into my Amos Northrop b ~ 1776-1780 in ? – undocumented in the AJudd Northrup Genealogy.

An old (but undoubtedly after the fact) document suggests the William of Greenfield line – Greenfield being part of Fairfield and adjacent to Redding, and at various points Stratford and Trumbull.

A great grandson of myAmos Northrop bears the name George Elmore Northrop.  So I found Amos intriguing.

Just came across two documents that might be of interest.

Of course I’ll  be delighted with any information that will help me determine if there’s a Northrop connection.  (By the way, there are 2 Northrops Solomon and Nathaniel who are documented as having been married in Redding.)

Thanks, Beth Northrop

Baptisms.
Ives, Benjamin,(father) Levi (Ives), August 26, 1754.

The present medical department of Yale college was instituted. Dr. Woodward's physical conformation, stalwart frame, physiognomy, dignity of carriage, great urbanity of manners, and benevolence, were very imposing, and prepossessing, and secured for him popular favor, while his studious, thoughtful and analytical qualities of mind, inspired general and unqualified respect and confidence in him as a beloved physician. He was by nature a noble gentleman.
'Manuscript of Dr. E. D. Hudson, of New York, 1875

He early associated with the choicest, most talented, and scientific physicians of the valley of the CT, and of the state ; and became an honored contemporary with them in their scientific pursuits and practice of medicine. With such men as Eli Todd, Mason F. Cogswell, Thomas Miner, William Tully, and Eli Ives, he was in moral, philanthropic and medical rapport though many of them were greatly his seniors in years. It was their custom to hold stated monthly meetings of what was denominated as the Hopkins Medical Society every member becoming such, by a unanimous ballot ; to read essays, discuss the character, types, and causes of any prevailing or local disease ; also the properties, powers and availability of various remedial agencies. Pharmacy received a good share of their attention, which by their analytical studies and personal experiments was scientifically advanced ; the improvement, in the present practice of medicine reflects their wisdom and philanthropy. Dr. Todd had an immediate and special concern for the insane ; and made nervous and brain affections the subject of weighty consideration, and untiring research. In that important study and humane desire. Dr. Woodward contributed his warmest sympathy and mental efforts. They introduced the subject to the State Medical Society, and urged the practical advantage and necessity of a public institution for the special study and treatment of insanity.

r appeals were cordially accepted and adopted, and both were appointed on a committee to devise the ways and means to accomplish the worthy object. The CT Retreat for the Insane, at Hartford, and its immeasurable good and scientific results, testify to the wisdom and beneficent works of these men.
In 1832, Dr. Woodward left Wethersfield, abandoned his general practice of medicine, accepted the honorable appointment of super- intendent and physician-in-chief, of the MA State Lunatic Asylum, at Worcester ; wherein he devoted his great talents exclusively to the treatment and well being of the insane. His annual reports of the cases in that institution, his medical and moral treat- ment of its inmates were very creditable to his head and heart, and were valuable auxiliaries to medical science. He also manifested great interest, and exercised commendable zeal and influence on behaif of inebriates and idiots, for their treat- ment, and evolution by legitimate means ; and to establish an asylum for the one class of unfortunates, and a school for the other.

As a testimonial of the regard which was entertained for his professional and moral worth, the " old Bay state " has deposited a marble bust of the man in the lunatic asylum. In 1846, he retired from professional duties, because of impaired health, and made his resi- dence at Northampton, where he deceased in 1850, aged sixty-three years. In religion. Dr. Woodward was a Christian democrat ; a philanthropist of a most worthy pattern; not regardful of sectarism, yet respectful to all livedfaiths^ manifested in love to God and good will to men. His life being almost exclusively devoted to science and philanthropy, gave him very little time to bestow upon politics and parties. Yet on one or two occasions he was elected to the state senate, when as usual he magnified his office for the public good. Such in brief was the character and life of Dr. Samuel B. Woodward, one of the sons of the town of Torrington ; a son in whom all other of her sons may justly feel a pride.

TORRINGFORD CHURCH. The Society.
PREACHING services were held by Rev. Nathaniel
nh Roberts, on the east side of the town, six Sabbaths, in 1754, and also in 1755, and the next year the preaching was measured by the amount they paid to the society. The town vote, however, gave them the privilege of having preaching four months that year, and released them from paying for the support of Mr. Roberts. The meetings at this time were held in the house of Nehemiah Gaylord and Shubael Griswold. In 1757, a petition was sent to the assembly, signed by nineteen persons, asking the Uberty to have preaching such part of the year as they were able, and to be released from supporting Mr. Roberts. The number of families in that part of the town at that time is stated to have been about twenty. The following were the petitioners : Abraham Dibble, Nehemiah Gaylord, Benjamin Bissell, Jonathan Kelsey, David Birge, John Birge, Jonathan Gillett, Ebenezer Winchell, Samuel Durwin, Joshua Austin, Charles Mather, Thomas Dibble, Shubael Griswold, Aaron Yale, Ephraim Dibble. Wolcottville Episcopal Church

The Episcopal Church.
Services were held, occasionally in Wolcottville, in accordance with the usages of the Protestant Episcopal church, previous to 1842 ; the ministers so officiating were the rectors of Christ church, Harwinton, and of St. Michael's of Litchfield. In that vear the Rev. Henry Zell began to officiate regularly in one of the district school houses in the village, and to minister to the Episcopalian families residing, in the town.
In February 1843, ^ l^g^l notice was given to all persons desirous of organizing a parish to meet for that purpose, in the brick Academy. The meeting was held according to the notice ; the Rev. Dr. Frederick Holcomb in the chair, and the organization effected, and the following constitution adopted,' The society took the name and title of Trinity church. Its purpose was declared to be the worship of Almighty God, agreeable to the forms, usages, doctrines, and discipline of the Protestant Episcopal church in the United States of America.

===========
The Torrington Academy.
This institution was erected by the joint effort of several men, interested in the higher advantages of education, in about eighteen hundred and eighteen or nineteen, and was located at the green, near Erastus Hodges, or a little south of the Second Meetinghouse. The ' Nathaniel Gaylord kept what was termed a grammar school, for a number of successive winters, about 1806, and school keeping became a passion, and often over twenty went out to teach in the same season ; and Torringford school teachers enjoyed a high reputation in the adjoining towns as well as at home.

Rev. Herman L. Vaill, while studying theology at Goshen, in 1821, j
I was one of the earliest teachers in this house. The school was con- ! tinued with some intervals some twenty-five or thirty years, after 1 which the building was purchased by the late Sheldon Barber and placed at the corner of the roads near his house and used for a work i shop. ; The Brick Academy, a three story building in Wolcottville south ' of the bridge on Main street, was built as a Union meeting house and j academy, and was used for both purposes quite a number of years.
It has been occupied as a manufactory, a store, and a Masonic Hall. The Academy on Church street, built about 1859, ^^^ been merged into the Union Graded school of the village. Wolcottville Public Schools. In 1798, the Torringford school society voted that John Brooker and Isaac Edgarton might have the use of their own money for schooling ; i. <'., they were at an inconvenient distance from the school houses, and therefore might employ a teacher in their own neighbor- hood. John Brooker then lived in the house, still standing a little east of the papier machie shop, and Isaac Edgarton in the same neighborhood, or perhaps further south. The society was very careful that this money should be used as designed, for the year previous they voted that John Brooker, Isaac Edgarton and Zebulon Curtiss might have the use of their own money, if they lay it out in schooling their children in other schools and bring a certificate to that eff^ect, and the same requisition was made each year. The nearest schools were the west district of Torringford and the school in Litchfield, half or three-fourths of a mile south of the present village of Wolcottville.

n 1808, the school society voted that Mrs. Sally Sanford and Porter Bissell be annexed to the district in Litchfield. Mrs. Sanford then lived near the Coe Furniture store on Litchfield street. In 1 8 10, the society voted that " all living west of Eliphalet Eno's and belonging to the west district have the use of their own money," showing that no district had yet been formed in what is now the village. In 1812, they stated that the "families of Eliphalet Eno, Hezekiah Eno, Jonathan Ives, Widow Ives, Shelburn Ives, Trumbull Ives, and John Cook and sons, are to be annexed to the village district," but the district was not formed until the next year, when they voted the village to be a district, and Uri Taylor was ap- pointed the committee and collector, and this was probably the first officer of any kind Wolcottville ever had. There are no votes for taxes in the village district, which look like paying for a school house, and the house having been built in 181 4. or 1815, it is quite probable that it was built by volunteer subscriptions and work, and that Uri Taylor took a large part of this stock,
as he did in the First Meeting house and parsonage. This house stood on the site of the present Register office on Main street. Miss Fannie C. Austin, now Mrs. Laurin Wetmore, taught school in this house, in 1817 or 18, it being before it was enlarged. As the village increased and more room was needed, this house was length- ened, to nearly double its original size. Some time after, a brick School house was built on Litchfield street, which is still standing a little above the railroad, and is used as a dwelling; another was built on what is now George street, which is also used now as a dwelling ; and another was built on Church street, west side of the rail road. The one on George street was two stories and the second story was occupied some time as a higher department, or grammar school.

n 1859, Dea. L. Wetmore gave a valuable and appropriate lot on Church street opposite his own residence, as a site for a school building, and on this a two story house was erected soon after, and was called the Academy, but was used as the higher department of the several schools of the village, Lucius Clark was principal of the school on George street when the new building was erected. He removed his department into the new building and taught there a term or two. The following persons succeeded him as principal of the academy and having the oversight of the other schools in the village : A. E. Barlow, A. B., now, and for many years past, professor in Amherst college ; C. B. McClenn, E. A. Paddock, MissHotchkiss, H. M. Morrill A.B., D. M. Means, A.B., and Charles L. Fellows. About 1863 and 4, there was a strong desire in the community to consolidate the schools, but certain parties who seemed opposed to all real improvements, opposed the plan with great energy. The contest went on for several years, those persons having large money interests in the manufacturies were most of them in favor of the Union graded school. At the time and soon after the revival of enterprise in the brass mill in 1863, a number of families came in from Waterbury where they already had a free, graded school, and their efforts, with those who favored the'plan in Wolcott-ville, were successful and the consolidation was effected. Then the academy building was rearranged and large additions to it built and the present commodious edifice secured. The enterprise of public school education in this village, has had but faint support as a whole, until very recently, and now the most that has been attained is a building, partially fitted, but sparingly furnished with apparatus for the work of common school education. It might be a question worthy of entertainment whether a school of such efficiency and grade of studies as would retain in it, boys and
girls from twelve to sixteen years of age, instead of their being sent abroad to obtain a knowledge of those branches, almost universally believed to belong to proper common school education should be
maintained here. It was a great work to reorganize and enter upon
a graded system of teaching as was done under the supervision of Henry M. Morrill, late judge of the court of the city of Waterbury. He taught four years, studying law with Esq. H. S. Barbour, and
secured much efficiency in the schools, but the work was only commenced. Some considerable advancement has been made since the beginning, but the spirit that opposed the building of the house, has opposed for years, the paying for it until very recently a tax was laid to meet the demands, and that same spirit will oppose the furnishing of books and apparatus for the school, as is the ordinary method of such schools, and that same spirit does send small children by the dozen to sit in their seats the whole day without a book or slate or scrap of paper with which to work, unless private benevolence fur- nishes them. The following persons have been teachers in this school during the school year ending July i, 1877 :Mr. Charles L. Fellows, principal, of Wol- Miss Mary Miller, of Winsted.
cottville. Mrs. Sarah Coe Fellows, of Wolcottville. Miss Gertrude Fenn, of Terryville. Miss Bell A. Waterman, of Torringford. Miss Sarah B. Norton, of Goshen. Miss Sarah C. Calhoun, of Wolcottville. Miss Linda Woodford, of Avon. Miss Hattie Griswold, of Auburn, Indiana.

==========
When Asa Loomis of Torringford was married in June 1778, the young men banded together to steal the bride and carry her away and keep her until the bridegroom should pay for a supper and brandy all. round. The day of the marriage Mr. Loomis was to take his bride home, on horseback, the usual method of traveling. After
starting with his. bride, he was overtaken, by one after another, of young men on horseback, until a dozen or two had collected about him as if to accompany him on his journey. On a given signal, the horses were put into the utmost confusion in front of, and about the one the bridal pair were riding. Just then Trumbull Ives, having been appointed, seized the bride, drew her to the saddle of his own horse, and rode away with all possible speed. The bridegroom was a little too expert, in tangles, and escaped the net laid for him and gave chase for his bride, while the multitude followed with the pur- pose of aiding the man with the bride to make his escape ; but their plans failed in part, for the bride was not taken out of Torringford, but to the tavern, where supper and liquors were ordered and the bride detained until the bridegroom paid the bill. This was not the end of the matter ; Mr. Loomis sued the whole company, a long lawsuit followed ; all the individuals were fined, and it was many years before all the fines were paid and the matter ended.

ELMORE, Samuel Edward, President of the CT River Banking Company, Hartford, b. in South Windsor, CT, November 3, 1833, son of Captain Harvey & Clarissa (Burnham) Elmore. One of his ancestors was Edward Elmer, one of the party who with the Reverend Thomas Hooker began the settlement of Hartford in 1636. Edward Elmer is thought to have been the great-grandson of Bishop Elmer, of London, and to have come from Braintree, England. The name appears with various spellings in the early records. This ancestor, after living in Northampton, MA, a few years, returned to Hartford, where a tract of five hundred and fifty acres, from the CT River back for three miles, was obtained and improved by him. He lost his life in King Philip's War. From Edward, Mr. Elmore is descended in the following line : 2, John, born 1646; 3, Joseph, born 1678; 4, Samuel, born in 17o5; 5, Samuel, born in 1755; 6, Harvey, his father, born in 1799. Samuel of the fourth generation was one of the first settlers of Long Hill. His log cabin was one of the first two dwellings on South Windsor street, near the present Elmore homestead. His son Samuel was in five campaigns of the Revolutionary War.

SAM L E. ELMORE.

Captain Harvey Elmore represented South Windsor in the Legislature in 1842 and 1844, and was Captain of an independent rifle company attached to the Twenty-fifth Regiment, CT Militia. He married the d/oZenas and Thankful Burnham, of South Windsor. Their son Samuel Edward, the subject of this sketch, after studying in the South Windsor High School, Williston Seminary at East Hampton, MA, and at the Academy at Hinsdale, MA, was graduated at Williams College in 1857. He was a fellow-student with President Garfield. During his college days he was Captain of a scientific exploring expedition to Florida and the Keys, when a valuable collection was made for the museum of the Natural History Society at Williams. After graduation he taught in the Sedgwick Institute in Great Barrington, MA, and was Principal of the Stowe (Vermont) Academy in 1859. Returning to South Windsor, he was Representative from that town in 186o and 1864. As Chief Clerk in the office of the State Treasurer from 186o to 1865 he attended to a large part of the duty of raising funds for the equipment of the troops during the Civil War. Governor Buckingham sent him to Washington to collect for advances made by the State in aid of the Government, and with Rowland Swift he went to Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Yorktown to reenlist CT men whose terms of service had nearly expired, and to pay bounties. While in the Legislature in 1864 he obtained a charter for the Continental Life Insurance Company, of which he was chosen Secretary the following year and President a little later. In the ten years of his Presidency the assets of the company increased from one hundred and fifty thousand to two million five hundred thousand dollars. He was chosen President of the CT River Banking Company in 1875, which position he now holds. He is also a Director in the Pratt & Whitney Company, the CT River Company, the C. Cowles Company of New Haven, and the Hartford County Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and is interested in several other concerns. He is Treasurer of the J. R. Montgomery Company of Windsor Locks, and Secretary and Treasurer of the Utica Cement Company. His ancestral farm, which has been handed down without deed or document through seven generations, from the time of the Indian grant, is his special pride. Mr. Elmore is a member of the Sons of the Revolution, the Hartford Scientific Association, and the CT Historical Society. He was married November 1, 1864,to Mary Amelia Burnham, of Hartford. They have four children : Frank Harvey, Samuel Dean, Charles Burnham, and Henry Dennis Elmore.

Jonathan Coe and Denman Coe connections

Jonathan a descendant of John Coe 1729 born Stratford man generations in Stratford. is also descendant to Stratford Jonathan Coe.Denman coe m. a Northrop in Washington CT dau of Samuel>Elijah. DENMAN6 COE (John5, Capt. Ebenezer4, Capt. John3, Robert2, Robert1), born at Derby, CT, May 26, 1759, was a soldier in the Revolution, enlisting for six months on June 25, 1776, in Capt. Johnson's company, Col. William Douglass' regiment, of Gen. Wadsworth's brigade, which joined the army of Gen. Washington in New York City and took part in the battle of Long Island, Aug. 27, 1776, the attack on New York, Sept. 15, 1776, and the battle of White Plains, Oct. 28, 1776; term expired Dec. 25, 1776. (Report of Adj.-Gen. of Conn., p. 406.) He was also in service in July, 1779, in Capt. Holbrook's company, Col. Edward Russell's regiment, which marched to Fairfield. (Collections of Conn. Hist. Soc., vol. 8, p. 189.)

Denman Coe is enrolled in the US Census of 1790, as the head of a family at Watertown, CT, comprising one male over sixteen years, two males under sixteen years, and five females. About 1805 he went to Wayne Co., PA, and thence removed in 1807 to Clinton, Franklin Co., OH, where he established a farm, and he was also much employed as a civil engineer in extensive surveying in northern Ohio.

Denman Coe of CT emigrated to Wayne County, PA, where he remained a year or two, and then in 1807 came to Ohio. After remaining a short time in Worthington, he located in Clinton, on the Harbor road, on the Henry Innis farm. He lived there some five or six years, and then returned to Pennsylvania, where he subsequently died. Dudley and Ransom, his sons, received the homestcad on which Dudley resided until his death. He was married, at the age of fifty, to Sarah Hoskins, of Holmes county, by whom he had four sons and two daughters, all now living. Ransom Coe, in 1815, purchased, of Caleb Rice, a hundred acres 3 land, now owned by his son, A. F. Coe, which he cleared up, and on which he lived until his death, in October 1855. At the time of his death, he owned over five hundred acres of land. His wife was Elizabeth, d/oDavid Beers, Sr. She survived her husband some thirteen years. They had a family of six children, two of whom are deceased — Henry, who died, unmarried, in Clinton, and Mrs. Salinda Stewart, the eldest daughter, who died in Burlington, Iowa. Three of the surviving children reside in this township — Mrs. Lovilla Ackerman and A. F. Coe; Mrs. Rachel Stone lives in Delaware county.

He married Feb. 20, 1781, MARY NORTHROP, born Mar. 2, 1762, died in 1841, d/o Job and Violet (Peck) Northrop of Woodbridge, CT.
