ELLSWORTH, SHARONThe Ellsworth Burying GroundSharon, ConnecticutFrom Burying Grounds of Charon, CTAmenia and North East, N. Y.Published Amenia, NY 1903This ground was given to the Ellsworth Society by Joseph Lord, Esq., and his headstone recites the fact that he was the first to be buried in it.It is the common place of burial for a large section of the country roundabout. It has the appearance of being well kept and cared for. The headstones are in an upright position and the few that have become broken have been neatly repaired. It lies on the south side of the road between the two churches.

Sherman Fenn - Marriage & Mystery
Posted by: Dave Date: September 02, 2001 at 13:26:17

For many years we have been working on my wife's FENN genealogy; we quickly went back to Sherman Fenn, and then came to a skreeching halt.
Where we started was the 1850 Census of Plymouth, Litchfield County, CT; this shows:
Garnett S. Fenn 40 M Farmer ?
Samuel " 80 M Farmer ?
Polly " 70 F ?
Sherman Fenn 38 M Farmer CT
Belinda " 36 F CT
Garnete " 11 M CT( age 11 unclear)
Emily " 8 F CT
Charles " 6 M CT
Adaline " 2 F CT
Most anyone looking at the above would see two families, possibly related; one would be Samuel/Polly; the other Sherman/Belinda: this is how we saw it. Anyhow, it turns out to be quite different:
According to Connecticut Vital Records; Middlebury-Births-Deaths-Marriages; 1807-1850; Barbour Collection, 1925:
FENN, Sherman, of Middlebury, m. Eliza A. Morris, of Waterbury, Oct.4, 1843,by Rev. J. Atwater!!!
So who was/is Belinda, and where was Eliza in 1850?
Here we go to the Cemetery, so to speak:
Connecticut Headstone Inscriptions; Charles H. Hale Collection; RG 72:1;volumn 102
616-10 West Cemetery, Plymouth, CT
Fenn, Hart, died July 25, 1843, age: 38 Years
Fenn, Belinda, Wife of Hart, died March 24, 1876, age: 71 years
We also have:(Hale & Barbour)
Fenn, Sherman d. Nov. 9, 1861 Age 55, Plymouth Cem. 10 Pg 113
Fenn, Sherman d. Jan. 27, 1885 Age 64, Waterbury Cem. 4 Pg 397
Fenn, Belinda d. Mar. 24, 1876 Age71, Plymouth Cem. 10 Pg 105
Fenn, Eliza A. Morris d. Dec. 21, 1883 Age 57, Waterbury Cem. 4 Page 397
Now we have two Sherman's, plus both Eliza and Belinda, and it's getting more confusing, atleast to me. We also have:West Cemetery; 616-10, page 113
Fenn, Samuel, died Aug. 15, 1854, age 88 years
Fenn, Polly, wife of Samuel, died Nov. 15, 1860, age 83 years
Fenn, Garret S., died Oct. 26, 1861, age 57 years
Fenn, Sherman, died Nov. 9, 1861
Putting some of this together I believe, at this point, That Samuel and Polly were the parents of Sherman Fenn b. 1807; that this Sherman Fenn was a brother to Garrett Fenn, and that Sherman married either Eliza A. Morris as stated in 1843 (she was b. 1824), or that he lived with the Widow of Hart Fenn (Belinda), and that the Sherman who died in 1885 married Eliza A. Morris(this Sherman was born abt. 1821). Church records, however, point in a different direction in that Sherman, Belinda, and Eliza all three were members of the First Congressional Church of Waterbury, CT. They show a time line from 1840 to 1871 of Church membership, and as the 1871 listing refers to Sherman and Eliza, this would make it likely that Sherman Fenn, b. 1821 m. Eliza A. Morris, leaving me (us) with Sherman Fenn and Belinda which is where I first started. Belinda did go to New York City, Dr. Bernard's Church by Dec. 31, 1852, and to the 13th St. Presb. Church by Sept. 10, 1858, which means that she wasn't always home on the farm where Sherman was. Belinda's maiden name was Blakesee; this info came from Joan Sullivan.
Yes, the above is still somewhat of a mystery, but at least it's one with more data. I wouuld like also to Thank Joan Sullivan and Char for all of the help they've given us on this over the years, and that maybe some of the above info will fill in some blanks for them and other Fenn researchers.I believe my next option is to try and obtain the birth certificate of Sherman's son (?) Charles born in 1844 as shown on the 1850 Census info above, unless someone on the forum has a spare copy of this in their files that they would care to share.
