An old history of Brighouse seems to have a concentration of familiar names. Is it possible there is a thread that connects Brighouse and Wakefield, Walker, Holmes, Midgeley and Webster??
So here are the speculations
CONNECTIONS
Of Locations
Wakefield (in the lower Calder Valley)
At the start of 19th century Wakefield was a wealthy market town and inland port trading in wool and grain.[26] The Aire and Calder and Calder and Hebble Navigations and the Barnsley Canal were instrumental in the development of Wakefield as an important market for grain and more was sold here than at any other market in the north ...Road transport using turnpiked roads was important. Regular mail coaches departed to Leeds, London, Manchester, York and Sheffield and the 'Strafford Arms' was an important coaching inn.[29] The railways arrived in Wakefield in 1840 when Kirkgate Station was built on the Manchester to Leeds line. Wikipedia
Brighouse on River Calder
The name Brighouse (or "Bridge House") originates from a building on (or close to) the bridge over the River Calder. In its early history, it was a hamlet of the nearby village of Rastrick....There was a river crossing called Snake Hill Ford across the Calder – believed to have formed part of the Roman route between Wakefield and Manchester. A wooden structure called Rastrick Bridge was recorded in 1275.
The aim of the Calder and Hebble Navigation was to extend navigation west (upstream) from Wakefield to Sowerby Bridge near Halifax.[1] ... First proposed in 1740, construction started in November 1759. ... By November 1764, the navigation was open as far as Brighouse, some 16 miles (26 km) from Wakefield.
This story sounds a lot like William's story. Is this Benjamin connected??

William Webster's first wife was Mary Ann Holmes of Shelton. Even after her death, the Websters (especially my grandfather, Benjamin) maintained a continuing relationship with the entire family.
Thanks to a wonderful find by my cousin Paul, we now have a great ad AND can identify the general location in Shelton.
